Courageous Wins Inaugural ROAD TO THE WORLDS Waypoints Series

NEWPORT, R.I. (August 29, 2019) – In the first-ever ROAD TO THE WORLDS Waypoints Series, it came down to the last day of the last regatta – the 2019 12 Metre World Championship held over July 8-13 in Newport, R.I. – to determine Courageous (US-26) as the overall Series winner. Introduced in 2017 to help build 12 Metre competition in the Northern Europe, Southern Europe and Americas fleets, the WAYPOINTS Series tallied scores posted by 40 12 Metres from nine countries in 28 regattas held in five countries over a period of three years. It awarded points for both participation and performance and the victor’s crown to the team that had accumulated the greatest number of points by the end of the World Championship. As for the secondary focus of the WAYPOINTS Series – to further the recognition of a global collection of heritage 12 Metres and the owners who are working to preserve their histories – it didn’t hurt that Courageous is perhaps the most famous 12 Metre in the universe.

Courageous, an Olin Stephens design launched in 1974, was the first all-aluminum hulled 12 Metre and the second 12 Metre to successfully defend the America’s Cup twice: in 1974, skippered by Ted Hood and, perhaps most famously, in 1977 when Ted Turner defeated Alan Bond’s Australia (KA-5) four races to zero in a best-of-seven series.

“We focused on the Waypoints Series by making sure we had a consistent crew, performing and doing well in as many regattas as possible,” said Courageous co-skipper Ralph Isham, who with fellow Newport co-skipper Alexander Auersperg and crew members Steve Glascock and Ward Marsh formed a syndicate 15 years ago to enter into a long-term lease of the yacht after it was donated to the Museum of Yachting. “It means a great deal to our crew that we performed consistently over many regattas in many conditions…light air, heavy air, varied wind…and with Challenge XII (KA-10) and Victory ’83 (K-22) always nipping at our heels.”

The Courageous syndicate members have been racing 12 Metres since 1999, when they initially gathered to sail Columbia (US-16), the first 12 Metre ever to win the Auld Mug, and prepare for the 2001 America’s Cup Jubilee in Cowes (the only gathering of 12 Metres larger than that at the 2019 12 Metre World Championship). “When we came back from Cowes, we rebuilt Courageous, and we’ve been sailing and working on her ever since,” said Isham, noting that a “total reset” overseen by Naval Architect David Pedrick in 2002/2003 put Courageous into “great shape and progressively made her faster and faster.” (Prior to the 2019 12 Metre World Championship, Naval Architect Jim Taylor collaborated with sailmaker and Courageous crew member Robbie Doyle to make further modifications to her hull, rudder and mast.)

“In the beginning, the boats in the Modern Division (for 12 Metres built between 1967 and 1983) were just us and two others – Intrepid (US-22) and Freedom (US-30) – but after Dennis Williams and Jack LeFort brought Victory ‘83 and Challenge XII to the game, it was very encouraging for other owners who wanted to step up,” said Isham. “We never imagined we’d have eight boats on the line in our Modern Division at the World Championship. It was amazing, a thing of beauty, so stunning to see.”

Significantly, five of the current crew of 16 aboard Courageous have won the “Auld Mug” at some point in their lives. Robbie Doyle and Gary Jobson, who serve as main trimmer and tactician, respectively, crewed in the same positions aboard Courageous in ’77. Jib trimmer Jon Wright sailed on three America’s Cup winners: Courageous in ’74,  Freedom in ’80 and Stars & Stripes (US-55) in ’87. Navigator LJ Edgcomb crewed on Courageous in ’74 and ’77, and jib trimmer Stu Argo sailed on America3 in ’92.

The crew, which also included America’s Cup veteran Arthur Santry at the helm, contributed immensely to the boat’s impressive performance at the Worlds. Courageous tied on point score for second place with Enterprise (US-27); however, on a tie breaker she had to settle for third. (Jack LeFort’s Challenge XII won and was crowned the World Champion in the Modern Division.)

“We were happy we did well in the Worlds,” said Isham. “Would we like to have won? Sure, but winning the ROAD TO THE WORLDS Waypoints Series was a real sign of achievement for our crew. The series definitely served its purpose of keeping us motivated and connected with 12 Metre fleets around the world.”

The Waypoints Series Perpetual Trophy, donated by 12 Metre Yacht Club Commodore James Gubelmann, depicts the famous schooner America in great detail (both above and below the waterline), as translated by Pairpoint Glass Company.

The next 12 Metre World Championship is scheduled for August 16-23, 2020 in Helsinki, Finland.

Olympic Medalists Grael and Bank to Battle Head-to-Head at 12 Metre Worlds

NEWPORT, RI (January 23, 2019) – Brazil’s Torben Grael and Denmark’s Jesper Bank, who have eight Olympic sailing medals between them, will face off in the 2019 12 Metre World Championship, joining sailing royalty from around the globe for the largest-ever gathering of 12 Metres in the U.S. Scheduled for July 8-13 in Newport, R.I. the 12 Metre Worlds is hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club, the International Twelve Metre Association (ITMA) America’s Fleet and the 12 Metre Yacht Club and takes place on the same waters where the America’s Cup was held in 12 Metres from 1958 to 1983, adding further historical significance to this fleet racing competition planned for two dozen teams representing seven countries in four divisions.

Grael, winner of five Olympic medals (two golds and two bronzes in Star class and one silver in Soling class) will skipper Italian Patrizio Bertelli’s KA-12 Kookaburra II in the seven-boat Grand Prix Division while Bertelli’s second boat, US-12 Nyala, will defend its World Title from Barcelona 2014 in the four-boat Vintage Division.

“I am looking forward to some action in these beautiful and historical boats and to sailing them in a special place like Newport,” said Grael, whose past 12 Metre experience includes winning the 1999 12 Metre Worlds in Saint Tropez with KZ-7 Kiwi Magic (also competing in the Grand Prix Division here) and sailing Nyala in the America’s Cup Jubilee in Cowes in 2001.

And while Grael adds relevant 12 Metre experience to his accomplishment of being one of the most successful sailors in Olympic history, he nevertheless has enormous respect for Bank’s sailing accomplishments. “I know Jesper well; we have sailed Solings against each other on many occasions. He is a great sailor.”

Bank has won three Olympic Medals (two golds and one bronze in Soling class). At the Worlds, he will serve as tactician aboard KZ-5 Legacy (formerly Laura) while his close friend Thomas Andersen (Kerpeminde, Denmark) takes the helm.

“It was Thomas’s idea to come,” said Bank, adding that Andersen crewed for him during the ’84 Olympics and went on to helm many campaigns. “We grew up sailing Optimist Dinghies against each other in Fredericia, so it is a long, tested friendship. His father owned a 12 Metre, so that was part of his childhood, and Newport for us is such a legendary place for 12 Metres….”

Bank has campaigned for the America’s Cup twice, in 2003 with Victory Challenge and in 2007 with United Internet Team Germany. When asked which experience – America’s Cup competition or Olympic sailing – will better serve his participation in the 12 Metre Worlds, he explained: “The way I see it is the fleet racing in Olympic competition is more tactical and valuable coming into the 12 Metre Worlds, whereas America’s Cup match racing experience is not as relevant.”

Legacy has been chartered for the two weeks covering the 12 Metre Pre-Worlds Regatta (July 6-7) and the Worlds. “When we get here, it will be our introduction to sailing a Grand Prix 12 Metre. None of us has ever sailed one; it will be a steep learning curve.”

It is expected that Patrizio Bertelli, CEO of the Prada fashion group and primary backer of the Challenger of Record (Luna Rossa) for the 36th America’s Cup, will join Grael’s team aboard Kookaburra II. The rest of Grael’s team will consist of sailors from past Luna Rossa America’s Cup campaigns (2000 through 2015), while Mauro Pelaschier, skipper of the Azzurra America’s Cup campaign in ’82, will skipper Nyala with some original Azzurra sailors and ex-Luna Rossa sailors aboard. Kookaburra II and Nyala will arrive in Newport near the end of June to compete in the Pre-Worlds and will sail in the “12 Metre Jubilee” at the New York Yacht Club’s 175th Anniversary Regatta (July 15-20) after the Worlds.

The 12 Metres are divided into divisions based on when they were built: Grand Prix (for 12 Metres built in 1987, winged keel), Modern (1967-1983), Traditional (1958-1966) and Vintage (1907-1958). Grand Prix, Modern and Traditional divisions mostly represent 12 Metres built for America’s Cup competition, while the Vintage division represents those built prior to the Cup’s 12 Metre era and when 12 Metres held a place in Olympic history.

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND (November 6, 2018) – With a little more than eight months to go, Ida Lewis Yacht Club, the International Twelve Metre Association (ITMA) America’s Fleet and the 12 Metre Yacht Club are gearing up for the largest-ever gathering of historic 12 Metre yachts in the U.S. at the 2019 12 Metre World Championship. Scheduled for July 8-13, the regatta will host 24 teams from seven countries, and the fleet will include Italian Patrizio Bertelli’s US-12 Nyala, which is the defending 12 Metre World Champion, and five yachts that have successfully defended the America’s Cup: US-16 Columbia (1958), US-17 Weatherly (1962), US-22 Intrepid (1967 & 1970), US-26 Courageous (1974 & 1977) and US-30 Freedom (1980).

“The last 12 Metre World Championship was in Barcelona, Spain in 2014,” said Event Chair Peter Gerard, “so there is some pent-up energy for sure. Over the last two years, there has been an emphasis on developing new teams, training for the worlds and getting these iconic yachts into the best possible condition for competition.”

Making the trip to Newport from overseas are teams from the Northern Europe and Southern Europe Fleets. They will join the Americas Fleet for racing on Rhode Island Sound where a dozen America’s Cup competitions were held for just over five decades. Three of them (between 1930 and ‘37) were contested in the Universal J Class yachts, while nine (between 1958 and ‘83) were held in the 12 Metre yachts that are now famously etched into the “Golden Era” of America’s Cup history.

ROAD TO THE WORLDS AND NEW YORK YACHT CLUB’S 12 METRE JUBILEE

The global ROAD TO THE WORLDS WAYPOINTS Series, which started in 2017, has helped build competition in the Northern Europe, Southern Europe and Americas fleets and culminates with a series winner named at the conclusion of the 12 Metre Pre-Worlds Regatta, scheduled for just prior to the Worlds on July 6-7.

For some extended racing excitement beyond the Worlds, New York Yacht Club has invited the 12 Metre Class to participate in a “12 Metre Jubilee” at its 175th Anniversary Regatta (July 15-20) and compete for a series of historic 12 Metre Trophies.

“It will be a full summer of happenings,” said Gerard, explaining that the last four WAYPOINTS SERIES events* are scheduled for 2019 in New England as tune-ups for the Worlds. “This remarkably large fleet of 12 Metres, known for their historic significance, beauty and grace, will create a spectacle of 12 Metre racing that has not been seen here since the America’s Cup days of old.”

A Window Onto the 2019 Worlds

NEWPORT, R.I. (July 24, 2017) – The waters off Newport, R.I., were alive with 12 Metres when the Newport Trophy Regatta took place over July 21-23. The event, hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club, reflected the excitement growing for the 12 Metre World Championship set to take place here in 2019 as part of the New York Yacht Club’s 175th Anniversary Regatta. The historic fleet numbered ten boats, all collecting points in the global ROAD TO THE WORLDS Waypoint Series.  The closely matched New Zealand (KZ-3) and Laura (KZ-5) sparred in the Grand Prix division, while the uber competitive Freedom (US-30), Defender (US-33), Challenge XII (KA-10), Intrepid (US-22) and Courageous (US-26) took off the gloves in Modern Division and the beautifully spirited Columbia (US-16), Weatherly (US-17) and American Eagle (US-21) battled it out in Traditional Division.

The Grand Prix Division completed two races on Friday, while the other divisions completed only one in light breezes that just wouldn’t hold for a full day of racing planned “up the Bay.”  Saturday was worse when sailors floated for six hours “outside” on Rhode Island Sound waiting for wind that never came. Sunday, however, made it all worthwhile when four races were completed in upper Narragansett Bay, this time in a northeasterly that began with wind speeds in the mid-teens and then diminished to 7-8 knots as it clocked right.

“I think we went through our entire sail inventory, putting up the light #1, the heavy #1, the #3, a couple of different spinnakers…it was fun!,” said Gunther Buerman, the owner/driver aboard New Zealand. Although New Zealand beat Laura in all six of its races, Buerman said it wasn’t easy. “Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than smart, and we got lucky a couple of times. KZ-5 was every bit as fast as us today, and sailed really well.”

In the Modern fleet, Challenge XII held commanding leads in all but the last of its five races, when Courageous won. Accumulating six points for its final standing, Challenge XII finished eight points ahead of Courageous, which was tied on point score with Defender. Challenge XII, along with Freedom and Defender, are newly revived 12 Metres, their owners inspired by the promise of intense competition in 2019 when 12 Metres from across the globe are expected to come to Newport for the Worlds.

Challenge XII’s owner/driver Jack LeFort attributed the boat’s performance to crew work and great sails, among other things. “We’ve done some nice work modifying the boat, getting it ready, but we think there’s more room for improvement. By the time the Worlds come around, there are going to be more teams stepping it up, so we need to make sure we continue to move our game up as well.”  Historically, Challenge XII was a contender in the 1983 America’s Cup series. “It’s Ben Lexcen’s last boat,” said LeFort. “He’s probably smiling somewhere right now. It’s got great bones, it’s fast off the breeze. People thought it was a light-air boat. We don’t think that; we just think it’s a really good boat.”

In Traditional Division, Columbia won four of five races, leading over Weatherly and American Eagle, which finished second and third, respectively.

Previewing the social events on tap for 2019, a Celebration Dinner for the 50th Anniversary of Intrepid’s first America’s Cup victory and the 40th Anniversary of Courageous’s second America’s Cup victory was held on Friday at the International Yacht Restoration School’s Restoration Hall.

Waypoint Series standings have been tallied based on previous events held in Newport (the Metrefest Newport Regatta held in June), Germany and Denmark.

12 Metre Class Maps Road to 2019 Worlds in Newport

The Countdown Begins!

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND (December 8, 2016) – The International 12 Metre Class has announced the ROAD TO THE WORLDS, a 900-day schedule of international regattas and social events leading up to what will arguably be one of the most highly anticipated Metre yachting events since the America’s Cup Jubilee in 2001: the 2019 12 Metre World Championship in Newport, R.I.

Scheduled for July 15-21, 2019, to coincide with celebrations marking the 175th anniversary of the New York Yacht Club, the 2019 12 Metre World Championship is expected to attract more than 30 historic 12 Metres. Participating Twelves will come from the Americas Fleet, which includes a number of Newport-based vintage, traditional, modern and grand prix 12 Metres as well as other America’s Cup-era Twelves from around the U.S.; the Northern and Southern Europe Fleets, which consist primarily of Vintage and Antique Twelves; and the southern continents.

“The prospect of a Jubilee-caliber event in Newport, hosted by the New York Yacht Club, has generated incredible enthusiasm on the part of past, present and potential 12 Metre owners and enthusiasts,” said Peter Gerard, Vice President of the Americas Fleet and chair of the 2019 Worlds, noting that the last 12 Metre World Championship was held in 2014 in Barcelona, Spain.

The ROAD TO THE WORLDS is a series of competitions, global in nature, that will be a constant “work in progress,” revolving around mainstay events in Europe and at least 16 major regattas in North America.

“The goal is to encourage more participation by existing 12 Metre owners and to provide an exciting competitive and social program to attract new owners and charterers to this historic class,” said Gerard. “Like the 2001 America’s Cup Jubilee, when 38 Twelves gathered in Cowes, England, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the America’s Cup, the 2019 12 Metre Worlds will be an event that fans of this historic class will not want to miss. The racing and social events in Newport will be second to none as part of the New York Yacht Club’s 175th Anniversary Regatta.”

Designed to the International Rule, the first 12 Metres were built in 1907 and selected for Olympic competition in 1908, 1912 and 1920. Prior to World War II, the Twelves were highly sought-after racer cruisers, both in Europe and America. Chosen to replace the massive J-Class yachts for the post-war revival of America’s Cup competition in 1958, the Twelves then became synonymous with the Cup and the New York Yacht Club until 1983 when Royal Perth Yacht Club’s Australia II bested New York Yacht Club’s Liberty to end the 132-year winning streak that is the longest in sporting history. The Twelves competed for the coveted Auld Mug for the last time in 1987, on the waters off Perth, Australia.

The 2019 12 Metre World Championship will revisit those halcyon days of the America’s Cup when glamorous social events, the traditions of sailing, and the visions of Twelves cutting a swath on Narragansett Bay earned the class an unrivaled place in both the history of the City by the Sea and the America’s Cup, still the sport’s most illustrious event.

“The Twelves have played an important part in yachting history, and no place appreciates them more than Newport and the New York Yacht Club,” said Gerard. “The ROAD TO THE WORLDS and the 2019 12 Metre World Championship are the best ways we know to commemorate that appreciation and present a memorable celebration of the class.”

The ROAD TO THE WORLDS schedule in 2017 starts with the Newport MetreFest, June 9-11, scheduled to coincide with the New York Yacht Club 163rd Annual Regatta.

Trifecta of Trophies for Dennis Williams and his Victory ’83 Team

NEWPORT, RI (September 26, 2016) – Nine 12 Metre teams made it a long weekend in Newport as they competed in their North American Championship, hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club from Friday through Sunday (September 23-25).  Sailing on sloops best known as the America’s Cup boats during that event’s so-called “Golden Era” (1958-1987), the teams competed in three divisions – Grand Prix, Modern and Traditional – and completed eight races in 13-17 knot breezes that held for courses both on Rhode Island Sound (where the America’s Cup was held from 1930-1983) and upper Narragansett Bay.

Winning the three-boat Modern division was Victory ’83, skippered by Dennis Williams (Newport, R.I./Hobe Sound, Fla.), who won all three of his races on day one but had a tougher time of it on day two. “The second day it was very close racing,” said Williams. “Intrepid (skippered by Jack Curtin, New York, N.Y.) was going really well, and we were lucky to be able to edge them out twice at the finish line. That actually made the difference: we had a five-point lead after the first two days, and all we had to do on the third day was get two thirds (in the two races held) and not foul anyone or break down.”  In the end, Intrepid finished third overall, conceding second to Courageous, skippered by Ralph Isham (Newport, R.I./New York, N.Y.).

In the hard-fought Traditional class, it was Alain and Dan Hanover’s (Boston, Mass.) Columbia that edged out Weatherly, skippered by Jay Schachne (Barrington, R.I.), by two points after a protest in the last race of the last day went its way. It resulted in the team posting a total of four victories in its score line along with three seconds and a third. Weatherly’s strong performance included three victories and a two-point lead in final scoring over Bob Morton’s (Newport,R.I.) American Eagle.

Winning Grand Prix division by eight points over its closest competitor was KZ-3, skippered by Gunther Buerman (Newport, R.I.).  “It was really hard racing,” said Buerman, who has sailed with the same team for five years and is looking forward to competing in the 12 Metre Worlds here in 2019. “I doubt whether we finished more than a minute ahead in all the races (that we won), and the one race we lost was only by two seconds. The other teams are getting better and better, but I firmly believe I have the fastest 12 Metre and the best people. Things have gone well, and the team is clicking; I wish the worlds were right now!”

KZ-5, skippered by Kip Curren (Newport, R.I.) took second in Grand Prix division, while Lionheart, skippered by Harry Graves (Grand Isle, Vermont), finished third.

At the Awards Ceremony on Sunday afternoon at Ida Lewis Yacht Club, the Gubelmann Trophy was awarded to the three division winners, while the Ted Hood Trophy was awarded to the 12 Metre teams with the highest points overall for the season: KZ-3 (Grand Prix), Victory ’83 (Modern) and Weatherly (Traditional).

Not only did Dennis Williams take home the Gubelmann Trophy for his team’s Modern Class victory at the 2016 12 Metre North American Championship and the Ted Hood Trophy for his team’s participation and performance in this year’s series of 12 Metre events leading up to the North Americans, but also he was awarded this year’s Ted Turner Trophy for his “noteworthy contributions to the 12 Metre Class both on and off the water.”

Along with Victory ’83 (with which he has won the 12 Metre Worlds and multiple North American Championships), Williams owns two other 12 Metres, USA (US-61) and Defender (US-33). They both need work to become race-ready, but if Williams has his way, they will be completed and have new owners by the 2019 12 Metre World Championship in Newport, when 30 of the boats are expected to converge on Newport from all over the world.

“We need some like-minded potential owners to come along and understand the importance of propagating this historic fleet and keeping it alive,” said Williams.  “We’re starting to feel the buzz for the Worlds, and it’s generating interest in getting these and other 12 Metres that are out there ‘off the hard’ and into the water.”

Williams added that Defender is “almost put back together,” but USA “is a much bigger project,” due to its needing a new keel and underbody. “I’ve always said that we are only temporary guardians of these historic 12 Metres. We have to leave them better than when we found them. We maintain them, we improve them, but then we pass them along to somebody else who will do the same thing.”

Fleet of Nine Starts Competition Next Week

NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND (September 15, 2016) – There are few things that delight sailors, and landlubbers, more than catching sight of a historic 12 Metre yacht slicing through the water. Fortunately for anyone who lives in or visits Newport, R.I., this week, a fleet of nine boats will gather in the City by the Sea to contest the 12 Metre North American Championship hosted by Ida Lewis Yacht Club from September 23-25, 2016.

“Spectators can look forward to seeing three boats racing in each of three classes – Grand Prix, Modern and Traditional,” said Peter Gerard, Vice President of the Americas Fleet.  “Beginning on Friday, September 23, seven races will be held either on Narragansett Bay north of the bridge, or on Rhode Island Sound.”

Participating 12 Metres will be docked at Bannister’s Wharf starting on Thursday, September 22.  With course signals at 1055 each morning of racing, landlubbers who go to Fort Adams between 0900-1030 will have the best chance of seeing the 12s sailing out to the racecourse.

Competing will be K-Z5 LAURA, K-18 LIONHEART and K-Z3 NEW ZEALAND in the Grand Prix class; K-22 VICTORY 83, US-26 COURAGEOUS and US-22 INTREPID in the Modern class; and US-16 COLUMBIA, US-17 WEATHERLY and US-21 AMERICAN EAGLE in the Traditional class.

Mark your calendars:  In 2019 the 12 Metre World Championship will be held in Newport, R.I., in June.  Gerard is anticipating that 25 boats – more than half coming from outside North America – will make it a memorable event.
